Almost 1 million Americans are legally blind
Visual Impairment and Blindness
- 16.5 million people in the United States are living with vision impairment.
- Common causes of low vision include age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and neurogenic vision loss.
- Every 7 minutes, someone in America permanently loses his/her eyesight.
More than 16.5 million people in America have vision impairment. The
mission of the Loew Vision Rehabilitation Institute is to help
partially sighted individuals, through the use of rehabilitative
services, once all medical and surgical options have been exhausted.
The Loew Vision Rehabilitation Institute will offer an
interdisciplinary team of professionals to evaluate the needs of the
patient and offer a variety of services. Instruction will be provided
in how to best use the remaining vision to perform everyday functions,
work and self-care activities. Assistive devices are used and are
available for purchase to enhance remaining vision. Support services
are offered as well as referrals to other community resources.
Counseling is available to help with the adjustment to vision changes. Additionally, The Loew Vision Rehabilitation Institute is committed to:
- Offering an outreach vision screening program to elementary
school-aged children in the Los Angeles area
- Funding optic nerve research
