Have you ever wondered whythings happened to you? When I was 24 years old, life was going along as planned. I was working hard at my career, hanging out with friends and frankly thinking I was invincible. And then the unthinkable happened. I went in for surgery to have a relatively benign procedure done, and woke up to find myself without vision in my left eye. Now what? The world that was going along just fine came crashing down. Who was going to get me through this? Was I going to be able to drive again? How was I going to adjust to this major permanent change in my life? These were just a few of the many questions that came rushing through my head as I was beginning to accept what happened to me. I soon realized that I was not the only person in the world living with partial vision. It was overwhelming trying to find a single facility with all the services that I needed under one roof to help me cope with the adjustments in my life. At that moment I realized that I wanted to dedicate a lot of my time to helping other people like me through similar situations. After many discussions with my family and Dr. Glen March, we have decided to open the Loew Vision Rehabilitation Institute, a place where people who face a sudden loss of vision or a gradual change due to a variety of causes can go and get the much needed services and support they deserve. In addition, we intend to offer a vision screening program for kindergarten-fifth grade and funding for research to hopefully reverse permanent vision loss. Sarah Loew |
