Low Vision is a term used when vision leaves an individual unable to maintain a functional level of visual activity. This may be due to the onset of eye disease or traumatic injury. This typically is related to visual acuities of 20/60 or worse. Visual function can also be limited by restricted visual fields even if the acuity remains good. Low vision is the residual visual acuity of the eye after correction with eyeglasses or contact lenses. Low vision is caused by many conditions, but the most common are: Macular Degeneration Low Vision Rehabilitation is most often delivered by a Low Vision Specialist through the management of three variables: Illumination, Magnification and Education.
Illumination is extremely important. Most people with low vision find that additional lighting helps greatly in accomplishing visual tasks. This is because of the enhanced contrast the light provides. The extra light may create glare however, depending on the angle of the illuminating light and the reflective properties of the target. A magazine article may need a very different angle and source of light than a newspaper because of the quality of the paper. In general, adding illumination makes it easier to distinguish letters on the page because of the increase in contrast. Magnification helps when the image is larger than the blind spot.
