Vision Screening for children Kindergarten-5th grade
- Vision loss can have a profound impact on a child’s development, cognitive abilities and academic performance.
- Visual abnormalities and disorders affect millions of children. Refractive error, amblyopia and strabismus are common disorders in children.
- 90% of visual problems in children are correctable with eyeglasses. Approximately 4% of children suffer from amblyopia (reduced acuity). Vision loss from amblyopia can be improved if treated by age 8.
- All of these conditions are treatable. If left untreated, they could hinder the normal visual development and lead to permanent vision loss.
The Program
- Provide screening to kindergarten through 5th grade children.
- Offer eye health services for those children who fail the vision screening.
- Provide access to eyecare providers for those children who are uninsured (to provide glasses).
- Increase community awareness of potential vision problems among school-age children and available treatment.
